How To Hang Wallpaper

Datum lines, paste consistency, seam treatment, and trade sequencing — the full installation reference for contractors managing hotel and commercial fitouts

How to Hang Commercial Wallcovering :
A Professional Installer's Site Guide for Malaysian Projects

Hanging wallcovering on a single residential room and managing a 200-room hotel project installation are completely different disciplines. One pattern error in a single room goes unnoticed. The same error replicated across 200 rooms is a contractually significant defect. This site guide is written for professional wallcovering installers and site supervisors on large-scale Malaysian commercial projects. It covers datum setup, drop sequence, paste management, seam treatment, and how wallcovering installation coordinates with the other three finish trades — flooring, curtain tracks, and art frames — in the same space.

MALAYSIA INTERIOR LANDSCAPE

Introduction

Wallpaper can completely transform the look and atmosphere of a room, adding colour, texture and character that paint alone may not achieve. Although hanging wallpaper may seem challenging at first, the process becomes much easier with the right tools, careful preparation and a clear understanding of each installation step.

From preparing the wall and measuring each panel to applying adhesive and aligning patterns, every stage plays an important role in achieving a neat and long-lasting result. This guide explains how to hang wallpaper correctly, helping you avoid common issues such as air bubbles, uneven seams, peeling edges and mismatched patterns.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Product Overview

Window blinds are a practical and stylish window solution for modern interiors that require better light control, cleaner lines, and a more tailored look. Compared to traditional curtains, blinds offer a more compact profile while still giving you the flexibility to manage sunlight, privacy, glare, and visual comfort throughout the day.

At WCD | Decorative Spaces, our blinds collection is selected to suit a wide range of interiors, from residential homes and condominiums to offices, show units, hospitality spaces, and project installations. Whether you are looking for sheer day filtering, complete blackout performance, or a refined decorative finish, our collection offers functional and attractive options for different room types and design styles.

STEP 1

Establish the Datum Line

Use a laser level — never a structural corner — to set the vertical reference for every room on the project

Walls in Malaysian construction are rarely perfectly plumb. Door frames and corners drift by 5–10mm over a full wall height.

Set a true vertical datum line using a laser level before hanging the first drop in every room. This datum is the reference for every subsequent drop.

The same laser datum should be shared with the SPC flooring crew (for expansion gap alignment), the curtain track fitters (for bracket level), and the art frame installation team (for picture hanging level). One datum across all four finish trades eliminates the accumulated misalignment that makes finished rooms look crooked.

STEP 2

Identify Pattern Type and Set Focal Point

Straight-match or half-drop — and why the focal point position must be confirmed before the first cut

Straight-match (set-match) patterns align horizontally across adjacent drops. Half-drop patterns offset alternate drops by half the pattern repeat height.

Before cutting the first drop, confirm where the pattern focal point should fall. On a hotel guestroom feature wall, the focal point is typically at ceiling height or centred on the headboard zone. This determines the cut point for Drop 1.

Always hang from the feature wall outward toward less visible corners. Any pattern off-cut or misalignment lands in the least conspicuous position.

STEP 3

Manage Paste Consistency

Fresh paste per session, manufacturer mixing ratio, and protecting SPC flooring from paste drip

Check paste consistency before every session. Over-diluted paste causes slippage and seam lifting. Under-diluted paste dries too fast to allow positioning.

Mix fresh batches for each day's session. Do not reuse paste left from the previous day.

On commercial sites where flooring is already installed, place protective sheeting at the wall base. Paste drips on flooring surfaces must be wiped immediately. Cured adhesive paste is difficult to remove from flooring without marking the surface.

STEP 4

Trade Sequencing — Wallcovering Relative to Other Finish Trades

The installation order that protects all four finish categories and prevents rework.

Correct trade sequence for a commercial room containing all four WCD finish categories:

FlooringInstalled first; skirting fitted after; establishes finished floor level
WallcoveringInstalled after flooring is complete; edges tuck behind skirting; paste drips fall on protective sheeting over finished flooring
Curtain tracksFitted after wallcovering is fully cured (24–48 hours); bracket fixings penetrate wallcovering into substrate
Art framesInstalled last; picture hooks or D-ring fixings into substrate through cured wallcovering; all wet trades complete

STEP 5

Trade Sequencing

Wallcovering Relative to Other Finish Trades The installation order that protects all four finish categories and prevents rework

Check paste consistency before every session. Over-diluted paste causes slippage and seam lifting. Under-diluted paste dries too fast to allow positioning.

Mix fresh batches for each day's session. Do not reuse paste left from the previous day.

On commercial sites where SPC flooring from Floorplace is already installed, place protective sheeting at the wall base. Paste drips on SPC surfaces must be wiped immediately. Cured adhesive paste is difficult to remove from SPC without marking the surface.
